Every 45 seconds someone in the US is sexually assaulted.
An American woman is 10 times more likely to be raped than to die in a car crash.
74% of sexual assaults are perpetrated by assailants well known to the victim.
61% of rape victims are females under the age of 18.
If we can’t hear this, see it for what it is – if we can’t admit the truth of this and allow its horror to touch us, how can we ever change our experience of a world where this reality exists?
I write these poems to talk about it.
I write these poems to break the isolation of silence, to acknowledge a problem for all of us, to address my own passive denial, and to say “You are not alone”. Abuse is perpetual and pervasive. I write in the hope that if we can face the problem and see the intricate whole truth of it, we can begin to work toward stopping abuse and minimizing its effect.
Overcoming happens in small ways. For me it starts with maintaining an ability to love, and remembering that however helpless I may feel, I still make my own choices (often mistakes) as to how I proceed.
